Scotland women were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy in their Pool C match of the EuroHockey Championships in Monchengladbach. The Scots face Spain tomorrow to determine their final position in the tournament.
The Scots were on the front foot from the first whistle, and they created their first chance after some good running by Sarah Jamieson down the right, but the cutback was well snuffed out.
Then a straight strike from the top of the circle by Amy Costello was well saved low to the right corner.
As half time approached, Jenny Eadie was denied by an excellent near post save, after she blasted towards goal in the third phase of a penalty corner.
The second quarter saw Scotland continue to pressure the Italians, but found the defence to be stubborn.
Then, completely against the run of play, Italy scored. A turnover in midfield allowed Italy to burst into the Scotland circle, with a three pass move, and make it 1-0 from close range through Emilia Munitis.
Almost immediately, Scotland equalised, when Amy Costello’s penalty corner blasted into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
The third quarter was stalemate, with Scotland edging the play but neither side creating any clear opportunities for a strike at goal.
Scotland had a couple of early penalty corners in the final quarter, but the routine which saw an exchange at the top of the circle, was well closed down both times.
A frantic end to the contest resulted in no further clear opportunities and it ended even with one game left to play. Scotland face Spain tomorrow.
