The University of Birmingham start their season after a bye week in Week 1. They travel to Stowe School to take on a Buckingham team beaten 3-0 at defending champions Surbiton last week. Buckingham fielded three new signings: Jo Hunter (from Surbiton), Lyndsey White (Loughborough Students) and Nicole Marks, set to face her former club on her home debut. Birmingham stayed up after the curtailment of the 2019-20 season prevented them taking on either Wimbledon or Swansea in a promotion/ relegation playoff after finishing ninth and have recruited Ailsa Naylor from Canterbury and Sarah Spooner from Beeston to try and help them pull away from the bottom of the table, but have lost Catherine Ledesma to Loughborough.
Whilst the big match of the weekend in the men’s leagues is at St George’s School as Old Georgians host Durham University.
The University of Durham have had to wait an extra week to make their first ever appearance in the Premier Division after being allocated the first week of the season.
Durham have a baptism of fire as they start at Old Georgians, who also made their first ever Premier Division appearance last season, but having recruited well, finished fourth at the end of the regular season and were set to face Surbiton in the Championship semi-finals.
Durham came up at the third attempt, having won the Conference North on two occasions but subsequently failing to finish in the top two of the Promotion Tournament. After winning the North League in 2007-08, Durham took part in the Conference North and had their first chance of promotion in 2010-11 when they won the Conference three points ahead of Sheffield Hallam.
